Forget traditional typing. All that tapping—it’s just not the most efficient way to get around a touchscreen. With Swype, you just slide your finger over the keys used to type the words and phrases you’re trying to send. Swype deciphers these swipes and translates them into the appropriate words with input accuracy "into the high 90s," Nuance’s head of mobile Aaron Sheedy told WIRED. The company constantly updates the keyboard’s dictionary with crowd-sourced words, so if some new-fangled phrase is trending, your phone knows what you mean. And of course, it learns from what you type, as well. Swype is already on over 1 billion devices worldwide, so it must be doing something right. Swype Ginger Keyboard

Best for: Those who want to write real good eloquently
While this cross platform option lets you customize your keyboard’s looks, Ginger Keyboard’s primary benefit over other keyboards is its easy access to Ginger Page, a productivity tool that offers dictionary, thesaurus, and translation functions. With this keyboard, you can easily write out an email, for example, then tap the G button in the corner to access Ginger Page to boost it to the next level. If you have a tendency to use the same phrases over and over, it offers alternate options you can choose from. It also offers a host of different themes. Ginger Keyboard TextExpander touch 3

TextExpander has long been a favorite of Mac users, letting them quickly type out long, complicated words or phrases with the help of user-defined shortcuts. It can be really useful, for instance, if you're live-blogging an Apple event and don't want to type out Craig Federighi's name every time he says something. Now, this shorthand-based input will be available systemwide on iOS, along with VoiceOver support, rather than just in apps that included TextExpander’s SDK . TextExpander
Apple’s latest mobile operating system is finally here, and with it something entirely new for iPhone users: the ability to choose your own touchscreen keyboard. There are already a multitude of options, and we’ve rounded many of them up here to help you choose the keyboard that’s right for you.

For starters, the process of installing a third-party keyboard is simple. First, download the app from the App Store as you normally would. Then, add it to your system-wide keyboard options, like you would do with an emoji keyboard. To do this, go to Settings > General > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard. Then go to the section for third-party keyboards, where you should see the keyboard apps you’ve installed (this is new to iOS 8). Tap a keyboard to be taken to its install page, and you’re ready to go. You can download as many keyboards as you want, and swap between them if your preferences change.

So far at least nine third-party companies have promised to debut iOS 8 keyboards in the coming weeks. Here’s a look at what each offers, starting with Apple’s own stock iOS 8 keyboard, which has received a significant update.
